The Hippidion was a remarkable genus of prehistoric horses that roamed South America during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. It is believed to have evolved in isolation in South America after its ancestors migrated from North America during the Great American Biotic Interchange. Sadly, like many Ice Age megafauna, the Hippidion went extinct around 10,000 years ago, likely due to a combination of climate change and human activity.
